Da Nang — Vietnam's Most Practical Beach City
Da Nang sits in the middle of Vietnam's S-shaped coastline and has emerged as one of Southeast Asia's better-value travel destinations over the past decade. I visited on a short trip from Singapore and found it genuinely enjoyable — but with a few sharp edges that first-time visitors should know about before landing.
Staying Connected Without a Local SIM
The good news: you do not need a Vietnamese SIM card to stay connected in Da Nang. Several practical options work well. Singapore's Singtel and StarHub both offer Vietnam roaming day-pass options that are reasonable for short trips. Most hotels and cafes in Da Nang have reliable WiFi. If you plan to use Grab (the Southeast Asian ride-hailing app), load it with a payment method before arrival so you are not dependent on data-heavy authentication on landing.
Airport Taxi Scam — What to Watch For
Da Nang International Airport has an active taxi scam problem. Touts approach arrivals offering fixed-price taxi rides. The meter they use either runs at an inflated rate or the journey price is agreed verbally and then disputed on arrival. Some cabs have tampered meters. I was targeted on arrival and would have overpaid significantly without prior knowledge.
The safe approach: use Grab exclusively for airport transfers and all city transport. Open the Grab app in the arrivals hall, book a GrabCar, and walk to the designated Grab pickup point. The price is fixed, the driver is rated, and the payment is handled in-app. Do not engage with any driver who approaches you in the arrivals hall.
What to See and Eat

- Dragon Bridge: Worth walking across on a weekend evening when it breathes fire
- Banh mi and pho: Street breakfast is excellent and costs next to nothing
- Hoi An day trip: 30 minutes south by Grab — easily the highlight of the area
Honest Traveller Verdict
Da Nang is good value, has genuine beach appeal, and serves as a perfect base for Hoi An. Use Grab everywhere, sort your data connectivity before you land, and ignore everyone who approaches you at the airport. Do those three things and the trip will be straightforward.
