First Impressions of Sydney
Sydney was not on my original Australia itinerary — I added it as a precursor to Melbourne, and it turned out to be the right decision. Arriving at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport for the first time, the thing that strikes you immediately is the scale. Singapore feels dense and vertical; Sydney sprawls horizontally in a way that takes time to calibrate to. As an Indian professional based in Singapore, Sydney felt simultaneously familiar and completely different.
Getting from the Airport
The Airport Link train connects Sydney Airport's domestic and international terminals to the city centre in approximately 13 minutes to Central Station. Buy an Opal card at the airport — it covers trains, buses, ferries, and light rail across Sydney and the daily and weekly caps make it significantly cheaper than individual fares for multi-trip days. The train is clean and reliable. Taxis and rideshares are available but traffic into the CBD during peak hours can add significant time.
The CBD — Walking the City
Sydney's CBD is denser than Melbourne's but less grid-like — the streets follow the contours of the original colonial settlement and the harbour topography. The area around Circular Quay is the most visually impactful part of the city: the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge in the same frame is not something you get used to quickly, even after multiple visits. The Royal Botanic Garden behind the Opera House is free and a genuine escape from the city noise.
The CBD retail and dining core runs from Town Hall to Martin Place. The food options range from excellent hawker-style Asian food in the Haymarket area (the closest thing to Singapore's hawker culture I found in Australia) to upscale dining in the CBD proper.
Practical Tips for First-Time Visitors
- Opal card: Get one at the airport before anything else
- Ferry over bridge: A Manly Ferry from Circular Quay is the cheapest and most spectacular harbour experience
- Darling Harbour: Good for an evening walk and dinner — explore the side streets for better value
- Weather: Sydney weather is variable year-round; carry a light layer regardless of the season
- Tipping: Not mandatory in Australia — rounding up or 10 percent in restaurants is sufficient and appreciated
