SAP RISE on Azure vs AWS vs GCP: How to Choose the Right Cloud

SAP RISE (Rise with SAP) moves your SAP landscape to SAP's managed cloud — but the underlying infrastructure runs on a major public cloud: Azure, AWS, or GCP. The cloud you choose affects integration capabilities, network topology, commercial terms, and the ecosystem of Azure/AWS/GCP services you can connect to your SAP environment. Here is the structured comparison enterprise SAP architects need to make this decision confidently.

What SAP RISE Actually Means for Cloud Choice

In a SAP RISE deployment, SAP manages the S/4HANA infrastructure on your chosen cloud's IaaS. You are not operating the cloud infrastructure directly — SAP's managed services team handles it. But the cloud choice still matters because: your non-SAP workloads and data probably live in a specific cloud; integration latency between SAP and adjacent systems depends on network topology; and native cloud services for analytics, AI, and data pipelines connect more naturally within the same cloud provider.

SAP RISE on Azure

Azure has the deepest integration with SAP of the three providers. Microsoft and SAP have a long-standing partnership with co-engineering on several capabilities:

  • SAP certifications: All HANA-certified Azure VM SKUs (M-series and Mv2-series) are fully certified for SAP HANA workloads at scale
  • Azure Integration Services: Native connectors for SAP in Azure Integration Services (formerly BizTalk/Logic Apps) reduce integration development effort for SAP-to-Azure data flows
  • Microsoft Fabric for SAP: Fabric's SAP connector enables direct analytics on SAP data without replication, using virtual tables — this is unique to Azure in the SAP ecosystem
  • Azure OpenAI with SAP: Native integration patterns between SAP BTP AI Core and Azure OpenAI enable AI use cases on SAP data without data exfiltration
  • Network topology: For organisations already on Azure, SAP RISE on Azure keeps all east-west traffic within Microsoft's network backbone

Azure is the strongest choice when your organisation is Azure-first and when Microsoft Fabric or Azure AI integration with SAP data is a strategic priority.

SAP RISE on AWS

AWS has a well-established SAP offering with strong certifications and a mature ecosystem of SAP on AWS partners. Key considerations:

  • Broad HANA-certified instance types including AWS-specific high-memory instances
  • Strong infrastructure reliability and global region footprint
  • SAP data integration to AWS analytics services (Redshift, Athena, SageMaker) is well-documented but requires custom ETL pipelines
  • Best choice when your organisation is AWS-first or when existing data workloads run on AWS

AWS lacks the same depth of co-engineered native SAP integrations that Azure has — particularly in the analytics and AI layers — but this gap is narrowing.

SAP RISE on GCP

GCP is the smallest of the three options for SAP RISE but has strengths in specific scenarios. Google and SAP have a partnership focused on data and AI — BigQuery native integration with SAP data is a differentiator for organisations with significant BigQuery investments. GCP's strong infrastructure for AI training workloads also matters if your SAP AI use cases require significant ML model training capacity.

GCP SAP RISE is the right choice specifically when your organisation is GCP-first and BigQuery-centric. It is a minority choice in the SAP ecosystem — the partner network and available SAP on GCP expertise are thinner than Azure or AWS.

Key Decision Factors

  • Existing cloud footprint: Co-locating SAP RISE with your primary cloud provider reduces network costs, latency, and integration complexity
  • Analytics and AI strategy: Azure wins if Microsoft Fabric or Azure OpenAI are strategic; GCP wins if BigQuery is central
  • Partner and support ecosystem: Azure and AWS have the deepest SAP implementation partner networks globally
  • Commercial terms: Evaluate against existing cloud commercial commitments — SAP RISE consumption may count toward Azure or AWS spend commitments depending on commercial structure

For most enterprises, the SAP RISE cloud choice should align with the cloud where your non-SAP workloads and data estate live. Integration simplicity and ecosystem depth usually outweigh any cloud-specific technical advantage.
