Azure Data at Ignite 2025 โ€” Smart Blob, HorizonDB, and Fabric IG

Ignite 2025 delivered three meaningful Azure data platform announcements that each address a distinct architectural constraint. Smart Blob rethinks how Azure Blob Storage handles tiering decisions. HorizonDB introduces a new database engine for ultra-high-throughput workloads. Fabric Intelligent Governance (IG) adds policy and lineage capabilities to the Microsoft Fabric platform. Together they signal where Microsoft is positioning Azure's data platform for the next generation of AI-heavy workloads.

Smart Blob โ€” Intelligent Storage Tiering

Azure Blob Storage has long offered lifecycle management policies for moving objects between hot, cool, cold, and archive tiers based on age or last-access time. Smart Blob replaces this rule-based approach with an ML-driven tiering engine that analyses actual access patterns per object and optimises tier placement continuously.

The practical benefit is cost reduction without manual policy tuning. In most large storage estates, the access pattern assumption embedded in a fixed lifecycle policy โ€” that an object not accessed for 30 days is cold โ€” is a simplification that leads to either over-tiering (moving data to cool that gets accessed again) or under-tiering (keeping warm what is genuinely cold). Smart Blob's per-object ML model addresses both failure modes.

HorizonDB โ€” Ultra-Fast Scale Database Engine

HorizonDB is a new Azure-native database engine optimised for workloads requiring extreme write throughput and low-latency reads at very high scale โ€” think real-time telemetry ingestion, financial tick data, high-frequency IoT event streams. It is positioned in the tier above Azure SQL Hyperscale and Azure Cosmos DB for scenarios where neither existing service's throughput ceiling is sufficient.

Key architectural characteristics include a disaggregated storage and compute model (similar to Cosmos DB and Hyperscale but taken further), columnar storage with row-level access, and a native time-series indexing capability that avoids the schema overhead of general-purpose databases for time-ordered data.

Fabric Intelligent Governance

Microsoft Fabric IG adds enterprise-grade data governance capabilities directly into the Fabric workspace experience. This includes automated data lineage tracking across Fabric workloads โ€” from ingestion pipelines through transformations to semantic models and reports โ€” and policy enforcement that integrates with Microsoft Purview for sensitivity labelling and access control.

For data platform architects, IG closes a gap that previously required a separate Purview deployment and manual lineage configuration. Lineage is now captured automatically as data moves through Fabric, and policies applied in Purview propagate to Fabric assets without additional configuration.
